Auckland's José Figueira Takes Charge of New Zealand U-20 Squad
Auckland's José Figueira, a proven leader from Auckland City FC and Auckland United, takes charge of the New Zealand Men's U-20 team, targeting the 2027 World Cup.
New Zealand Football has officially appointed José Figueira as the new head coach of the New Zealand Men’s U-20 team. Figueira, who brings a strong background from Auckland football, including successful stints with Auckland City FC and Auckland United, steps into the role previously held by Chris Greenacre. Greenacre recently departed to become the head coach of Wellington Phoenix’s A-League Men’s team, leaving the U-20 position open for Figueira, who served as an assistant coach during the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2025 cycle.
Holding the prestigious OFC Pro Coaching Licence, the highest coaching qualification available, José Figueira possesses extensive experience within the New Zealand football system. His prior national team leadership includes serving as head coach for the New Zealand Men’s U-17 side during the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2019, demonstrating his proven ability to guide young talent on the international stage.
Domestically, Figueira has achieved significant success, particularly with clubs based in Auckland and Wellington. He famously led Auckland City FC and Team Wellington to multiple national league titles, showcasing his tactical prowess and leadership. Furthermore, he secured the coveted OFC Champions League title with both clubs, solidifying his reputation as a top-tier coach in the region. In 2018, he guided Team Wellington to the FIFA Club World Cup, where they famously drew with UAE’s prominent side Al Ain before a penalty shootout elimination.
Most recently, José Figueira played a pivotal role at Auckland United, where he served as head coach of their National League side. Under his guidance, the team qualified for the Championship phase for the first time, a testament to his impact. Beyond on-field results, he was instrumental in overseeing player development, overhauling the club’s talent strategy, and actively supporting the nurturing of players into the professional game, further strengthening Auckland's football pathway.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new challenge, José Figueira stated, "It is a real privilege to take on this role and continue the great work Greeny has done across the previous cycle." He added, "From my time with the team as assistant coach, I’ve seen the level of talent we have coming through, so I’m really looking forward to getting back on the grass as we look to qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2027 in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan."
Figueira also highlighted his commitment to player progression, recalling, "As U-17 head coach I got to work with a number of players who have since gone on to become key members of the All Whites, so I’m excited about continuing that journey to support the development of the next generation." He concluded, "Football is going from strength to strength in New Zealand, so it is an honour help continue and support that growth."
José Figueira will commence his duties immediately, with the New Zealand Men’s U-20 team preparing for the upcoming OFC Men’s U-19 Championship. This tournament serves as the crucial qualifying event for the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2027. New Zealand has been drawn into a group with Tahiti, Fiji, and Vanuatu, with matches scheduled to take place in Apia, Samoa, starting from 2 September 2026.
