Auckland football fans are set for an exciting weekend in the Northern League as leading contenders Birkenhead United and East Coast Bays aim to widen their gap at the top. Both teams remain unbeaten after seven rounds and are heavily favoured in their upcoming fixtures. Meanwhile, Auckland United strengthens its attack with the return of talented winger Ben Wallace, promising thrilling action across the city's pitches.

Birkenhead United, currently 18 points clear of Saturday’s opponents Manukau United, are expected to dominate at Mangere Centre Park against a winless Manukau side. East Coast Bays will seek their third consecutive clean sheet when they host Auckland FC Reserves. Auckland FC Reserves might face challenges, having not played last weekend due to an inadequately linemarked pitch at Fred Taylor Park, which led to the postponement of their match against Bay Olympic.

The 'Game of the Week' features Fencibles United (4th) hosting Eastern Suburbs (3rd) at Riverhills Park on Saturday evening at 6:30 PM. This match promises an even contest for neutrals. Eastern Suburbs boast a robust defence, conceding only three goals in seven matches, while Fencibles United are known for their high-scoring, attacking approach, having netted 21 goals but also conceded 16.

Fencibles' go-forward style has led to big wins (4-0 vs. Manukau United, 7-1 vs. Melville United) but also high-scoring losses (5-2 vs. Tauranga City, 4-2 vs. East Coast Bays, 4-1 vs. Auckland City). This clash will test whether their offensive power can overcome Suburbs' organised defence. Elsewhere, defending champions Western Springs are struggling in the top half but have an opportunity to improve their standing against Melville United, who are yet to win at their Gower Park headquarters this season.

Auckland United has significantly bolstered its attack with the return of winger Ben Wallace (22). Wallace, who spent last season with title-winning Western Springs, previously scored four goals in the first six rounds of this Northern League season before rejoining Auckland United at Keith Hay Park. A former age-group international, Wallace represented New Zealand at the 2023 FIRA U-20 Men’s World Cup and made 38 appearances for the Wellington Phoenix Reserves, scoring 11 goals.

The versatile Hamilton-born player can impact games as a left winger, leading the line, or as an attacking midfielder, as demonstrated by his appearance off the bench in last weekend's 7-0 victory against Manukau United. Meanwhile, Tauranga City, currently third-bottom after a scratchy start, will look to improve their position in the league standings.
